Cycling in East Lothian

About the Club

The Musselburgh is a long established club, having been founded in 1934, but that is not to say that the club is old fashioned or bound by tradition. Indeed over the years the its members have been at the forefront of the development of cycling in Scotland. The club enjoys a stable membership of 40 plus, with a wide range of ages. The majority of our current members are 30 plus, with a sprinkling of youth and a solid wedge of older members some of who are still highly competitive. The members have varying interests and take part in a wide range of cycling related activities. On the competitive front we have a history of success at Scottish, British and indeed World Levels. The club encourages, promotes and assist its members to take part in completive cycling at all levels of ability. This is in the areas of Road Racing, Time Trials, Track Racing and an occasional foray into the world of Mountain Bike Racing. During the ‘Racing Season’ (March to September) there will be groups of riders from the club taking part in various races throughout the Country.

Many of the non-competitive club members and indeed non-cycling members are involved in many other areas of cycling. It has been part of the tradition of the club to be involved in the running of cycling at all levels. Over the years club members have been, and indeed still are SCU Committee and Board members, ESCA Chairman and Committee members and also BC/SCU Commissaires and Timekeepers. We consider it an important aspect of our responsibilities as a club to provide official representation at all cycling governance. In the same vein our members are involved with the running of many cycling events for the club and other organizations.
The Club has two registered SCU coaches including the Internationally famous “Davie Urquhart” as well as numerous experienced racing cyclists, all of whom are more than willing to share their knowledge, experience, technical insight and theories on all aspects of cycling. After the Meadowbank Track was built for the 1970 Commonwealth Games we were one of the first clubs to organize a Track Meeting and our involvement in this aspect of the sport has remained. We have regular track training sessions often in conjunction with other clubs.
The MRCC has its clubrooms in the old police station in Musselburgh Town Hall, where the members regularly meet on a Friday night for tea and discourse covering every aspect of life and occasionally even cycling! This is a good time to keep up with what’s happening and also have a bit of a laugh. As well as the social aspects of the regular club runs and club nights there are also organize a range of social events. There is the club post New Year Annual Presentation evening, the Freewheeling contest (an event where you don’t use any muscle, just gravity) and barbeque, as well as summer barbeques and the occasional mountain bike weekend. The club members have on occasion been involved with the organizing of cycling events for Musselburgh’s Riding of the Marshes (every 25 years) and the Honest Toun Festivals.During the summer the club runs a number of official race events; a Team Time Trial, 2 Individual Time Trials and 2 Road Races. In addition to these on most Wednesday evenings an unofficial training 10 mile Time Trial is run, usually at the Wallyford course. There is a chain gang type training run on one evening during the week starting from the clubrooms at the Town Hall and riders also participate in the Track League at Meadowbank Velodrome .An early season highlight held in late February is the clubs Audax ‘The Tour of East Lothian’. This is not a race but a reliability trial around checkpoints in the district of East Lothian. Because of the fact that you can take what ever time you wish to complete this event, stop to take breaks, travel along the quite and more interesting roads in East Lothian and also ride with a group of friends this event attracts around 200 entrants, of all ages and level of ability.
In the winter the club members are still in the saddle with Turbo-Training nights run at the clubrooms during the week. This has replaced the circuit training evenings that were run in the past. On a Sunday morning the club members can be seen meeting at the steps of Musselburgh Town Hall to take part in club training runs. There are different paced groups to suit the range of rider’s abilities, medium to fast for the competitive members and steady to medium for the less fit or more sociable riders.
